About the Role

We're looking for an early-career journalist to fill a paid entry-level position responsible for writing Signals, Semafor's unique version of Breaking News stories, as well as helping build, produce, and publish our newsletters where necessary. The position is New York or Washington, DC, based. The Newsroom Fellow will report to the Breaking News Editor. Candidates will be asked to complete a writing exercise as part of the interview process, and must retain the right to work where they live.

- Working with the Breaking News Editor to write Signals and breaking stories for a globally aware and sophisticated audience.
- Being proactive about pitching and planning stories and Signals around major developments in US politics and the 2024 race.
- Being flexible and willing to cover live news events (debates, conventions, rallies) and Semafor's Live Journalism events with newsmakers.
- Collaborate closely with the rest of the newsroom, work seamlessly across all of Semafor, and contribute to other products as they are developed.
- Working in a small team, providing critical admin, production, research, and other logistical support for Semafor across multiple verticals.

What makes you qualified

- A demonstrated interest in high-quality, globe-spanning journalism, including via prior fellowships, internships, or full-time staff experience.
- A passion for world events and a broad interest in a wide range of subjects, particularly US politics
- A willingness to take on a variety of tasks and responsibilities
- A broad reading list across conventional and unconventional sources
- An eagerness to be part of a dynamic work environment demanding initiative, flexibility, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed to help the team succeed
